                   Ever leading, still proceeding,

Men:  “[God] determines the number of the stars, and calls them each by name.” (Psalm 147:4)

Lord Jesus Christ, bright Morning Star, we worship you this day with praise and thanksgiving. Bless all our Christmas festivities and fill them with your presence among us as we celebrate your birth. You are our Lord! You are our Savior! In Your name we pray. Amen.

Hymn “As With Gladness Men of Old”                                              Congregation

1.  As with gladness men of old did the guiding star behold;

     As with joy they hailed its light, leading onward, beaming bright;

     So, most gracious Lord, may we evermore be led by Thee.

  1.   As with joyful steps they sped, Savior, to Thy lowly bed,

     There to bend the knee before Thee, whom heav’n and earth adore;

     So may we with willing feet ever seek Thy mercy seat.

  1.   As they offered gifts most rare at Thy cradle, rude and bare,

     So may we with holy joy, pure and free from sin’s alloy,

     All our costliest treasures bring, Christ, to Thee, our heav’nly King.

4.  Holy Jesus, ev’ry day keep us in the narrow way;

     And when earthly things are past, bring our ransomed souls at last

     Where they need no star to guide, where no clouds Thy glory hide.

5.  In the heav’nly country bright need they no created light;

     Thou its light, its joy, its crown, Thou its sun which goes not down;

     There forever may we sing, alleluias to our King.

C: Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.

Ch:  This will be a sign to you:

C:  You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.

Ch:  Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

THE CHRISTMAS STORY, Part 2, Luke 2:15-20              Children &Congregation

Ch:  When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another,

C:  “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

Ch:  So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.

C:  When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child,

Ch:  And all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.

C:  But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.

Ch:  The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

God Fulfills his Covenant Pledge

The Second Sunday after Christmas – Series C

God’s Word for Today

God’s activity at that first Christmas time when Jesus was born was the unfolding of the grand covenant of world-wide blessings.  This is the covenant that had been made to Abraham around 2000 years earlier. Now approximately 2000 years after Jesus’ birth we continue to reap the benefits.  Through Christ we enjoy a “dear Father – son” relationship with the almighty God himself.

First Lesson (Genesis 17:1-7)

  1.  What was the covenant that God had made with Abraham?
  2. What did he command as the way to seal this covenant to make its reality constantly evident to the people? (Gen 9-14)

Second Lesson (Galatians 4:4-7)

  1. What do you understand by “when the time had fully come?”
  2. What is the result of Jesus coming?

Gospel (Luke 1:68-75)

  1. What did Zechariah acknowledge (v.72) when he broke into song at the birth of John the Baptist?
  2. What is the result of God accomplishing his promise? (v.74-75)

Answers:

  1. He was going to make Abraham the “father of many nations,” be their God and provide them the land as their own.  In Gen 12:3 he clarifies that “all nations will be blessed” because of him.  It is from his descendants that the Savior would be born for the benefit of the whole world. (Do you see this includes you?)
  1. All the male children were to be circumcised as a sign of the covenant.  In the next generations it was to be an automatic rite carried out on the boys when they were eight days old.  It would connect them with the covenant God and his blessings to his people.
  1. God’s plans for us have not only a specific purpose but also a specific time schedule.   Jesus was born at a specific time because all the elements God was putting in place were ready. His countdown was over.  What wisdom we see in the way he carried it out so that the world would know the Savior!
  1. God’s Son became fully human and under law (including circumcised on the eighth day).  He did this so he could free us from the curse of law.  Now we receive the full relationship and blessings of being free sons (inheriting children) of God.  (Do you live in the security, peace and love of that relationship?)
  1. He saw this as the fulfillment of the “holy covenant, the oath he swore to our father Abraham”  (See the Genesis 17 reading)
  1. We will not only be rescued from our enemies (the curse of sin, the fear of death and the power of the devil), but will also be able to serve him without fear (no longer a slave but a son- Gal 4:7)

Our Freedom From Death – December 31, 2021

That by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil—and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.

The further we move away from December 25th, the smaller our Christmas celebration gets in life’s rear-view mirror. For many folks, that is extremely depressing. We prepare so intently (perhaps even frantically!) to make our celebration as close to perfect as we can. And then, in a flash, it’s over. And it’s tempting to think, “Is that it? Is that all there is?”

But Christians know that what happened at Christmas is not all there is. Our reason for celebrating Jesus’ birth is not just that he arrived in a manger. It’s that he eventually left the manger! The story of Jesus doesn’t fade to the closing credits with angels singing, shepherds worshiping, and Mary pondering all these things in her heart. Jesus eventually left the manger and passionately carried on until he’d carried out every part of the work required to save us. Living in perfection. Reaching out with affection. Resisting the devil to the point of exhaustion. Suffering in the deepest humiliation. Triumphing through his resurrection. Ascending with the greatest celebration. Making us a new creation. It was all a labor of love done for you by your brother to “destroy him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil—and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.”

One day we will die, but don’t let that thought bind you in chains of dread and fear because Jesus lived a perfect life as your substitute and paid for all your sins as your sacrifice. He then came to life, conquering death for you. He has done everything necessary for you to live eternally in heaven. And if it all depends on what Jesus has done, none of it depends on what you have done. Don’t let the thought of death hold you captive. Hear those shackles fall. What child is this? It’s Jesus, the substitute and sacrifice who has set you free.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, cast out my fear of death and every fear the plagues me. Help me face them knowing you are victorious, and you are near to me. Amen.

“He, too, shared in their humanity”—the import of that statement may not fully strike you until you consider how completely unwilling we are to settle for anything less than we think we deserve. If we pay for second-row seats behind home plate, there’s no way we’re going to accept being ushered up to the twenty-fifth row of the upper deck terrace instead. If our team is robbed of a hard-earned victory by an official’s error, that loss will sting as we remember it for years to come. If we reserve the SUV with third-row seating as our rental car and the best they can offer us at the counter is roughly the size of a clown car, we are going to grumble and complain and grouse to anyone who will listen.

Do you want to know how awesome Jesus is? Look at how willing he was to settle for less than he deserved. Jesus deserved the best heaven could offer. He willingly traded it for a crust of bread as his dinner and a rock for his pillow, for the indignities of childhood and insecurities of young adulthood. Jesus shared in our humanity. Being born was necessary so that he could one day die and so he could live every day in between as our perfect substitute.

Ever since the Garden of Eden, the devil has been trying to make us think that he is our closest friend. He tries to convince us that what he wants us to do will make us happy, fulfilled, prosperous. “Stick with me,” he says, “I have your best interests in mind.”

But, of course, the devil doesn’t. Only Jesus does. Only Jesus was willing to share our humanity and do everything necessary to save us from our sins so that we can share eternity with him.

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, you are not only the powerful God, but my human brother, my flesh and blood. Thank you for all you sacrificed to come and be a sacrifice for me. Help me to live my life always willing to sacrifice for you in return. Amen.

Our Unashamed Brother – December 29, 2021

Paul Gerhardt was a man who’d been put through the emotional wringer. Some might even call him a more recent version of Job. Because standing at the graveside of your son or daughter, especially a son or daughter who died at a young age, is one of the most horrific things a parent can imagine, that is if one can imagine it at all. Having to do that once would be borderline unbearable. Paul Gerhardt had to do it—four times. Four small caskets, four sets of funeral clothes, four painful goodbyes. And as if that weren’t enough, then Gerhardt’s wife died unexpectedly, leaving him as a single dad to their sole remaining child, a six-year-old boy.

But all that loss, believe it or not, is not what makes Paul Gerhardt memorable and noteworthy. What makes him memorable and noteworthy is the fact that he experienced what he experienced in life and yet was still able to sit down and put these words on paper in one of his hymns, “Dear Christian Friend, on him depend; be of good cheer and let no sorrow move you.” How could Paul Gerhardt say, “Be of good cheer and let no sorrow move you”? It’s because of what he wrote next. “For God’s own child in mercy mild, joins you to him, how greatly God must love you!”

God’s own child joined himself to our human family. He is not ashamed to call us his brothers and sisters. Shouldn’t he be? I mean, every family has at least one child who always seems to choose the more rebellious road. In God’s family, that rebel is you and me.

And yet here is our Jesus, our proud brother, unashamed to call us his siblings. And not only willing to simply call us his siblings, but our brother also went on to be our sacrifice so that we might spend eternity as co-heirs with him, sharing the same heavenly Father. Fellow rebels, rejoice! Jesus is willing to be our sacrifice, and he is not ashamed to call us his family.

Prayer:
Jesus, I am proud and so very thankful to be a part of your family. Amen.

As a 12-year-old, Jesus travels to Jerusalem with his parents, and when the festival is over, his parents accidentally head home without him. It’s unusual—but at the same time, it’s not hard to picture how that could happen. Mom and Dad are preoccupied with getting everything packed up and getting on the road on schedule. Perhaps, with Jesus being the oldest, Mary and Joseph had a few younger children demanding their immediate attention. Have you ever been on a road trip with your family? If you have, it’s a little easier to see how a semi-self-sufficient 12-year-old might not be his parents’ greatest concern at that moment.

We make a big deal about Jesus getting left there, but maybe we should be making a big deal about him even being there in the first place. He was there in Jerusalem to worship God! At any time was he tempted to think, “Wait a second, I am God!” He was there in Jerusalem to offer the required Passover sacrifices. At any time, was he tempted to think, “I’m the One all these sacrifices are pointing to? Shouldn’t I be on the other side of the altar? The object of the worship, rather than the one doing the worshiping?” Fact is, he is God. But he willingly chose to follow God’s laws. He did deserve to be the object of worship, but he willingly took his place alongside the worshipers.

So we see Jesus, even at 12 years old, already perfectly carrying out his Father’s will as our substitute. He perfectly worships at the temple for our moments of imperfect worship, distracted worship, uninterested worship. All so that on one dark Friday afternoon, he could step forward as our perfect substitute once again. Yes, all our accumulated punishment was placed on our substitute. Today, and every day, consider the magnificent and undeserved blessing of having a Savior so willing to be your substitute.

Prayer:
My sins are many, O Lord, but your mercies are even greater in number. May your perfection in my place always bring me true comfort and joy. Amen.

Does studying this text at this particular time seem like we’re maybe rushing things a little bit? Wasn’t it just a couple of days ago that we were gathered around the manger, gazing with awe at the Wonder born for us there? We’ve just finished singing “Hark the Herald Angels Sing, Glory to the Newborn King.” And now suddenly, Jesus is 12 years old! The birth of our Savior is a place in the Bible where we rightfully want to linger and ponder that singular moment in human history. The Creator becoming the created is a big deal. Are we rushing Christmas out the door?

We don’t have to feel that way. Don’t think of the verses from Luke chapter 2 as leaving the manger scene behind, but rather as filling in an important part of what the manger scene is all about.

Jesus’ birth is indeed significant and worthy of our highest joy and celebration. But Bethlehem was really just the first domino to fall in the story of God with Us. The 33 years that followed, the lifetime of humbling himself, of serving, of obedience, was a major part of why he was born in the first place.

Because we don’t have a lifetime of humbling ourselves, serving, obeying, we can’t string two seconds of perfection together. (As if we could even produce one second of perfection in the first place!) And eternal separation from God is what we have deserved as wages for our lifelong wicked work. But the One who demanded perfect and complete obedience saw our perfect and complete disobedience and came to do for us what we could not do for ourselves—to keep the law himself as one of us. And then, without there being any merit or lovability in us, Jesus gave up his life on a cross.

That is love unconditional. That’s what we celebrate at Christmas, after all. Not just that we have a substitute, but the amazing love for us that brought him here.

Prayer:
All praise and thanks to you, Lord Jesus, for the love that brought you as my substitute. Help me always to love you in return. Amen.

Just Like Us – December 26, 2021

Since the children have flesh and blood, Jesus too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil—and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.

A baby born in Bethlehem. It may have seemed pretty ordinary; mothers had babies all the time. The parents were certainly ordinary enough, a carpenter’s family from Nazareth. And the humble environment was probably not so unusual for many people of that day. But Luke, inspired by the Holy Spirit, tells of that birth with such majesty and beauty that it has captured the hearts of millions of people because this really was a birth like none other.

What made the ordinary so extraordinary? God became one of us to rescue all of us. To provide the perfect human life that was demanded to pay the punishment for sin, it required a perfect human being. “For this reason,” the Bible explains, “Jesus had to be made like his brothers in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.”

No wonder the angels and shepherds were so excited. This special baby, sent from heaven by God, came to “free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.” This baby has changed who we are. We used to be mortal, subject to death. But by dying for us and rising from the dead, Jesus gives us immortality. Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die” (John 14:25,26).

His was no ordinary birth; it was the most extraordinary birth of all time. God’s Son became a human being to rescue human beings. In him, we are immortal. We will live forever with God! The angels were excited. The shepherds were excited. And so are we.

Prayer:
Lord, thank you for becoming one of us and changing us by giving us immortality. Help me live my life with the confidence that in you, I will live forever. Amen.

Christmas Peace – December 25, 2021

What is peace?

Peace is the absence of trouble, tension, disaster, and surprise. Peace is the presence of safety, security, contentment, and relief. When you are at peace, there’s nothing else you need. You’d like things to stay just as they are. You hope that nothing changes.

Unfortunately, earthly “peace” will change and is always short-lived. Christmas meals bring some peace, but just hours later, you are hungry again. Happy relationships bring peace, but can you guarantee that even for one fleeting year, your solid relationship will never once face discord? Christmas presents bring a little peace, but the very same gadgets that cause a hearty, “Thanks!” are soon broken or forgotten. And how many people ever get everything on their Christmas lists? And even if they did, would they have lasting peace?

For lasting Christmas peace, we look away from earthly things and look to the Good Shepherd, Jesus. The Bible tells us, “He will stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the LORD, in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God. And they will live securely, for then his greatness will reach the ends of the earth. And he will be their peace” (Micah 5:4,5). Jesus’ peace is not only for a time, is not isolated to one area, and cannot be overruled. In power and compassion, his greatness reaches everywhere, all the time, penetrating our hearts to the core.

Jesus himself is our peace. Not Christmas meals, relationships, or presents, but Jesus. It’s not just that he knows where to find peace or that he shows us the way to peace—he IS our peace! In Jesus, we stand confidently under God’s favor. In Jesus, we live with the comfort of God’s abiding presence and almighty power. We know exactly what our eternal future will be. Jesus alone provides eternal safety, security, contentment, and relief. In him, our peace will never change.

What is peace? Jesus is peace. When you have him, you have it all.

Prayer:
Dear Jesus, prevent me from looking to earthly avenues of peace and thinking they will last. Instead, turn me toward Jesus, so that I might find true peace that lasts. Amen.

Of all the events in the Bible, I think I most would have liked to witness the night the angels appeared to the shepherds. Can you picture the scene? It was a quiet evening with the shepherds perhaps gathered around a fire. It was dark, and the clear sky enabled the stars to shine brightly. The sheep lay sleeping nearby. Suddenly, the sky filled with the light of hundreds perhaps even thousands, of angels. Anyone who saw it surely would have described it as breathtaking and awesome.

Luke writes that this experience filled the shepherds with joy. Can you imagine their thinking? “It’s happening! He’s finally here! The Messiah promised for centuries has come!” Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem is the answer to prayer, the fulfillment of prophecy, and the basis for our hope. His coming here and accomplishing his work of salvation is our guarantee of eternal life in heaven.

To see the angel’s announcement of our Savior’s birth would have been amazing for sure. But it would also have been great to see the Shepherd’s reaction The amazed expression on their faces. Their excited shouts of joy. Their adrenaline pumping as they ran off to spread the fantastic news.

Is that your reaction to Jesus? We are certainly tempted to take the message of Christmas for granted because we have heard it all before. It is easy to quickly forget the importance of what happened on that first Christmas. I imagine those Shepherds did not so easily forget what they saw.

God bless you as you worship your Lord and Savior tonight. May you also be filled with awe that God would keep his promises. May you also be filled with joy and a desire to share the good news of your Savior’s birth. While we were not there to see the angels, we can be just like those shepherds and spread the good news of our Savior’s birth wherever we go.

Prayer:
Dear Lord, bless my worship of you tonight. Like the shepherds, fill me with joy at the birth of Jesus and move me to share the wonderful news of his birth. Amen.

Make Room for Jesus – December 23, 2021

While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

How is it that no one had room for Jesus? Poor Mary was about to give birth, and nobody would invite them in. That is difficult for us to imagine happening to anyone, let alone the true Son of God and the Savior of the world. How could it be that no one had room for Jesus?

The truth of the matter is that we likely would not have let them in either. If you do not agree, take a look at your life. How much room do you have for Jesus? Where does he fit into your schedule if he fits at all? With so many things going on, there are quite a few days where time with Jesus doesn’t seem to land on the calendar. Where does he fit in your heart? With so many things we love and chase after, Jesus does not always find a home in our hearts either. What about your Christmas planning? Have you made time for cookies and decorations and shopping and gift wrapping but somehow not managed to be in God’s house to worship?

Thankfully Jesus had room for us. He blocked off his calendar and made sure nothing would get in the way of being our Savior. In this great love, he came down to earth and lived a perfect life in our place. He died the death that should have been ours, and he rose from the dead to forever defeat death for us.

With joy and gratitude in your heart, make room for Jesus this Christmas and always. Carve out some time on your calendar to read his Word. Clear out your heart and fill it with love for Jesus who died for you. Plan worship into your holiday schedule so that you can worship the One who is truly the reason for the season. God bless you as you make room for Jesus!

Prayer:
Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for coming to be my Savior even though I do not always make time for you. Fill my heart with your love and lead me to always make time for you. Amen.
