Scripture reading: Philippians 1:12-18

Now I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel. 13 As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ. 14 Because of my chains, most of the brothers in the Lord have been encouraged to speak the word of God more courageously and fearlessly.

15 It is true that some preach Christ out of envy and rivalry, but others out of goodwill. 16 The latter do so in love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel. 17 The former preach Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing that they can stir up trouble for me while I am in chains. 18 But what does it matter? The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice.

Out of love for God’s Word and people’s souls, we offer the Lord’s Supper only to communicant members of St. John’s and Emmanuel Ev. ART FOR DINNER It’s that time of the year, Art for Dinner will be held Saturday, February 2^nd ,at 5:00p.m. in the Montello High School community room. This is our 4^th Annual Fundraiser to help improve our school. This year the money raised will go to our Athletic Fund (funds will cover things such as new uniforms, tournament fees, updated equipment, etc.) We need your help! Please consider purchasing a ticket and enjoying the evening or consider making a donation. We are also looking for donations of items for our basket raffle. If you would be able to donate a basket already made up, any type of items, or services, gift cards, or products! If you know of any businesses that would be willing to donate, please ask them

as well. Please have all donations turned into the office by Wednesday, January 30^th. If you would like to work on projects at home or in the classroom, please feel free to do so and we would love to include them in our silent auction fundraiser. Any other family (Grandmas, Dads, Uncles, Cousins) art projects are welcome as well. God has blessed many of us with lots of different talents! What Drives You? That is one of the questions we will be thinking about this coming week at the Men’s Bible Study on Tuesday at 6:30pm. We will be asking the man called Saul, who is also the Apostle Paul, the same question. In January/February we will be looking to grow as we consider: “You Can Call Me Saul-You Can Call Me Paul-Just Call Me Saved By Grace,” as we see him in the book of Acts.

Divine Service II

Divine Service II is a version of the historic liturgy of the Christian church.

GOD’S WORD FOR TODAY Jesus Gives the Bread of Life That We Might Fulfill the Impossible – Have you ever been faced with an impossible task? When a job seems impossible, it’s difficult and frustrating to even attempt fulfilling it. For Christians, trusting in Jesus, believing his promises and loving others as he loves us sometimes seems impossible. But in today’s lessons we are shown how Jesus gives us the ability to fulfill impossible tasks by giving us the Bread of Life. Apart from Jesus, we can do nothing (Jn 15:5). But with God, nothing is impossible (Lk 1:37).

INVOCATION

The name of the triune God and the sign of the cross remind worshipers of their baptisms.

M: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

CONFESSION

M: Friends, let us approach God with a true heart and confess our sins, asking Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us.

C: Lord of life, I confess that I am by nature dead in sin.

For faithless worrying and selfish pride,

for sins of habit and sins of choice,

for the evil I have done and the good I have failed to do,

You should cast me away from Your presence forever.

O Lord, I am sorry for my sins. Forgive me, for Jesus’ sake.

ABSOLUTION

The use of the keys is that special power and right which Christ gave to His church on earth: to forgive the sins of penitent sinners. John 20:21-23

M: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. In His great mercy, God made us alive in Christ even when we were dead in our sins. Hear the Word of Christ through His called servant:

I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

LORD, HAVE MERCY Mark 10:47

Kyrie: Kyrie is the Greek word for Lord. The expression “Lord, have mercy” is one of the oldest worship responses in the Christian church.

M: In peace, let us pray to the Lord.

For the well-being of all people everywhere, that they may receive from You all they need to sustain body and life, hear our prayer, O Lord.

C: Lord, have mercy.

M: For the spread of Your life-giving Gospel throughout the world, that all who are lost in sin may be brought to faith in You, hear our prayer, O Christ.

M: For patience and perseverance in this life, that we may not lose the hope of heaven as we await Your return, hear our prayer, O Lord.

Christians praise God by proclaiming the great things He has done to accomplish our rescue from sin.

“Glory to God in the Highest” has been a Christian song of worship since the fourth century.

FIRST LESSON 1 KINGS 19:3-8

An angel strengthens Elijah

Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, while he himself went a day’s journey into the desert. He came to a broom tree, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, LORD,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.” Then he lay down under the tree and fell asleep.

All at once an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.” He looked around, and there by his head was a cake of bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again.

The angel of the LORD came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.” So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.

SECOND LESSON EPHESIANS 4:30–5:2

Spiritual living flows from God who has forgiven us

And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

As a prisoner for the Lord, then, I urge you to live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.

Jesus is the Bread of Life, the True Source of Spiritual Food

At this the Jews began to grumble about him because he said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?”

“Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered. “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day. It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God.’ Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me. No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father. I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life. I am the bread of life. Your forefathers ate the manna in the desert, yet they died. But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which a man may eat and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. NICENE CREED

Public confession is faith’s response to God’s saving Word. Christians composed the Nicene Creed in the fourth century to defend the Bible’s teachings that both Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit are true God, equal to the Father in one eternal, undivided Trinity.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through Him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, He came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate.

He suffered death and was buried. On the third day He rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian* and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

*The original text here reads “catholic,” a word meaning “universal.” The Church consists of all believers in heaven and on earth, of every time in history.

PREFACE

The words of the Preface mark the beginning of the Sacrament section of the service and lift the worshiper’s hearts in praise. The opening sentences are among the oldest in the Christian liturgy.

M: The Lord be with you.

C: And also with you.

C: We lift them up to the Lord.

M: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

C: It is good and right so to do.

M: It is good and right that we should at all times and in all places give You thanks, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who came as the Light of the world so that the world may have light and life through Him. Sanctus means “Holy.” Used possibly as early as the second century, this canticle was in wide use among Christians in worship by the fourteenth century.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

Jesus took bread and “gave thanks” (Matthew 26:26).

M: Blessed are You, O Lord of heaven and earth. We praise and thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus Christ, and we remember the great acts of love through which He has ransomed us from sin, death, and the devil’s power.

By His incarnation, He became one with us.

By His perfect life, He fulfilled Your holy will.

As he speaks the Words of Institution, the minister both proclaims the words of Jesus to the congregation and sets apart the bread and wine for the Lord’s use. The sign of the cross reminds us of Christ’s death.

MEN’S BIBLE STUDY A great turnout last week for the first of three summer Men’s Bible Classes! Tuesday night at 6:30PM we do it again. Joshua’s Last Lecture teaches about “blind” faith and the old adage, “practice what you preach.” Meet in the church basement.

CARDS The cards have been restocked! They are located in the lower level of St. John’s. Come check them out and see what’s new!

“WHO IS FATHER MARQUETTE?” is the theme for this year’s Father Marquette Day’s Parade downtown Montello on Saturday 8/18 at 12pm. Come meet FM’s lost cousin (see pic) on our church float as he welcome Indians and Pioneers to “paddle” their canoe and kayaks to his tent church. Float riders and walkers are welcome to help us set up Saturday morning in the St. John’s parking lot, and ride/walk in the parade, and join us for face-painting, food, and fun at parade’s end–Montello City Park.

ST. JOHN’S A/V ROOM–HELP WANTED Our current audio/visual crew (Tracy Hoffman & Aaron Wachholz) welcomes more members to learn what they do to create and show PowerPoint services on the big screen, record services to create DVD’s and upload to our church website, operate the sound system, etc. “Many hands make light work.”

LET’S CELEBRATE MISSIONS WITH OUR WELS MISSIONARIES IN RUSSIA, LUKE & JENNIFER WOLFGRAMM!

Plan to attend!! We are blessed to have another full day of celebrating missions on Sunday, August 26, with special services at 8 a.m. at Emmanuel and at 10 a.m. at St. John’s. A freewill offering will be taken at both services to support the work in Russia.

Pastor Wolfgramm will lead morning worship with what he calls a “Sermontation,” which will combine the morning sermon with a power point presentation about Russia. Then, following the St. John’s service, ALL are invited for a summer “piknik” lunch (Freewill Offering) in the lower level around *11:15 a.m. The Wolfgramms will then do a tag-team mission presentation, that will be completely different from the morning “sermontation,” beginning around *12:00 p.m. (*Times are approximate.)

TODAY’S THEME The 7th Sunday of Easter (Mother’s Day): The Ascended Lord, Our Great High Priest, Prepares His Church for Its Work

FIRST LESSON Acts 1: 15-26

Preparation by the disciples for witnessing to the world

In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty) and said, “Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through the mouth of David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus—he was one of our number and shared in this ministry.”

(With the reward he got for his wickedness, Judas bought a field; there he fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out. Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this, so they called that field in their language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)

“For,” said Peter, “it is written in the book of Psalms,

”‘May his place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in it,’and,” ‘May another take his place of leadership.’

Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from John’s baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection.”

So they proposed two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. Then they prayed, “Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs.” Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.

SECOND LESSON 1 John 4:13-21

We love because he first loved us

We know that we live in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in him and he in God. And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.

God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him. In this way, love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world we are like him. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

We love because he first loved us. If anyone says, “I love God,” yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. And he has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his brother.

“I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. MISSION FESTIVAL ON SUNDAY, MAY 20, OFFERS FOOD FOR BODY & SOUL.  Mark your calendars for a full day celebrating missions!  Cameroon, Africa, will be highlighted at mission festival services at 8 a.m. at Emmanuel and at 10 a.m. at St. John’s with Missionary Daniel Kroll.  A freewill offering will be taken at both services to support the work in Cameroon. 

   The day offers you a “4-Ps Mission Meal” of Preaching- Pasta-Pie- Presentation.  Pastor Kroll will share food for the soul as he preaches God’s Word at both worship services.  Then, ALL are invited for food for the body at a meal of pasta (lasagna) and homemade pie (Freewill Offering), at St. John’s, beginning around 11:30 a.m. and hosted as a Thrivent Action Team event by women of the LWMS.  Finally, more food for the soul as Missionary Kroll and his wife Karen do a tag-team presentation about Cameroon at St. John’s.

   The Lutheran Church of Cameroon (LCC) is on a journey to build up the church and the faith of her members in a land filled with ancestor worship, witchcraft, and false teachers.  Ten seminarians are finishing the second of their five-year seminary. This is big news as there have been no new pastors since 1999—when these men graduate, their pastorate will have more than doubled!  Your prayer and monetary support is vital.  Cameroon currently operates on project funds rather than being part of the WELS budget.

WELCOME TO OUR CHURCH! We extend a warm welcome to everyone today, especially our visitors. In the bulletin you’ll find an outline of today’s service, a calendar of events and other bits of information. In the red hymn book you’ll find the songs we sing and the order of service that we follow. If you would like a large print hymnal or bulletin please ask one of our ushers and they will gladly assist you. THE SEASON OF LENT During the six Sundays of Lent (before Easter Sunday), God invites us to take an honest look at ourselves and REPENT–to turn away from sin and to turn toward Jesus for forgiveness and life. In today’s Scripture readings, God first teaches us the LAW, (summarized in the 10 commandments) that shows us our sin and need for a Savior. God then teaches us the GOSPEL (the good news of Jesus) that shows us our Savior, “Christ crucified” in whom we trust and whose message we proclaim.

GOD’S WORD FOR TODAY Divine Jesus Rescues Us From God’s Law – The season of Lent has historically been a time for Christians to meditate on Jesus’ passion.  His suffering and death atoned for the sins we committed.  Therefore, Lent is the “serious season” of the church year where we Christians put an extra emphasis on recognizing and confessing our own sins.  Congregations that have special mid-week services are able to make the tone somber and reflective.  The Sundays in Lent, however, serve as “mini Easters” where the readings and hymns bring joy and comfort to the believer who is reflecting on his/her own sins and Jesus’ passion during this season. The third Sunday in Lent reminds us of God’s perfect law and his holy demand that we fear and love him.  Thankfully, Jesus has fulfilled God’s law in our place.

At Mt. Sinai God gives Moses the Ten Commandments–a summary of His Law

And God spoke all these words: “I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

“You shall have no other gods before me.

“You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. The preaching of the cross is God’s wisdom

Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength.

Jesus clears the temple–a call to repentance

When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple courts he found men selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple area, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. To those who sold doves he said, “Get these out of here! How dare you turn my Father’s house into a market!”

His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for your house will consume me.”

Then the Jews demanded of him, “What miraculous sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?”

Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.”

The Jews replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?” But the temple he had spoken of was his body. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the Scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.

M: Dear heavenly Father, as we once again journey to the cross this Lenten season, we are humbled by your love for us and our sinful world. We thank you for the gift of your Son, our Savior, and for all you have given us.

C: We especially thank you for your spiritual gifts: for your Holy Word and Sacraments, for the forgiveness of sins in Jesus, and for our eternal home in heaven.

M: We give you thanks for making us valuable sons and daughters to you through the perfect life and redeeming death of our dear Savior, Jesus.

Part of this spring’s Easter for Kids will be a baby animal petting zoo. The event is Saturday, March 24. EASTER FOR KIDS DONATIONS APPRECIATED Planning for 75 children on Saturday, March 24.  Monetary gifts help the most—used for advertising, mailings, crafts, baskets, anything & everything for the event. We appreciate donations of home-crafted items for the baskets.  Volunteers are still needed to bake for the baskets & make jello jigglers for the lunch. WELCOME TO OUR CHURCH! We extend a warm welcome to everyone today, especially our visitors. In the bulletin you’ll find an outline of today’s service, a calendar of events and other bits of information. GOD’S WORD FOR TODAY Jesus Defeats the Devil – In Lent we see Jesus go to the cross to suffer and die for us.  Today’s lessons show that when God tests us and the devil tempts us (every day!), Jesus is our holiness before God.  He is also our strength, and our example.  We do not live on bread alone, Jesus says.  We live on God’s promises.  They come to us in holy baptism, in holy communion, and straight from the Bible, the book in which every word is from the mouth of God.

A PERSONAL PRAYER FOR THOSE GATHERED FOR WORSHIP Lord our strength, the battle of good and evil rages within and around us, and our ancient foe Satan tempts us with his deceits and empty promises. Keep us steadfast in your Word, and when we fall, forgive us and restore us in your service. Accept our prayers and songs of praise. To you be all glory. Amen.

OLD TESTAMENT LESSON Genesis 22:1-18 (today’s sermon text)

Abraham’s test of faith

Sometime later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!”

“Here I am,” he replied.

Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about.”

Early the next morning Abraham got up and saddled his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.”

Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together, Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father?”

“Yes, my son?” Abraham replied. “The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”

Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together.

When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. But the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!”

“Here I am,” he replied.

“Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.”

Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. So Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.”

The angel of the LORD called to Abraham from heaven a second time and said, “I swear by myself, declares the LORD, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.”

Then Abraham returned to his servants, and they set off together for Beersheba. And Abraham stayed in Beersheba.

We are more than conquerors

What then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? Who will bring any charge against those whom God has chosen? It is God who justifies. Who is he that condemns? Christ Jesus, who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

GOD’S WORD FOR TODAY

Jesus is Revealed by A Tireless Compulsion to Preach the Gospel – Have you ever felt compelled to do or say something because you’re a Christian? Sometimes that compulsion springs from feelings of guilt. Sadly, that can even be true of our gospel outreach efforts. Such guilt-ridden efforts burn us out and leave us feeling unfulfilled, guiltier. But Jesus doesn’t want us to feel guilty about his Great Commission, and he doesn’t want us to reach out with the gospel due to guilt. Instead it’s the freedom of the gospel that inspires our words and actions as Christians. As we more deeply appreciate the unconditional love that Jesus has for us and for all people, we will more and more feel a tireless compulsion to preach the gospel.

Dear Heavenly Father: I come to your house today to worship you, to give you the praise you deserve and the prayers and hymns you desire. Through your Word and Spirit, come to me. Tired and depressed, Job lost his desire to proclaim the good news and nearly lost his faith

Christ’s love for sinners was Paul’s motivation to preach the gospel and become all things to all men

Yet when I preach the gospel, I cannot boast, for I am compelled to preach. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! If I preach voluntarily, I have a reward; if not voluntarily, I am simply discharging the trust committed to me. What then is my reward? Just this: that in preaching the gospel I may offer it free of charge, and so not make use of my rights in preaching it.

Though I am free and belong to no man, I make myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. Worn out and looking for solitude, Jesus shows his tireless compulsion to preach the good news

As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told Jesus about her. So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them.

That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. The whole town gathered at the door, and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was.

Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. Simon and his companions went to look for him, and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!”

Jesus replied, “Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can preach there also. That is why I have come.” So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.

EASTER FOR KIDS DONATIONS Planning for 75 children for Saturday, March 24, at St. John’s. Your monetary gifts are needed most and help purchase: 1) crafts 2) plastic Easter pails 3) candy/prizes for 375 plastic eggs 4) outdoor vinyl advertising banner 5) food for lunch 6) treats/other basket stuffers. Donate home-crafted items for the baskets. Volunteer to bake for the baskets. Please contact Linda Wachholz 608-369-2635 to donate or volunteer.

We still collect plain print-free ice cream pails (ValuTime brand at Frietags or others). Donations are not needed for plastic eggs, grass, or traditional baskets. However, if you already have some you would like to give, we will take them. A donation box is located in the linkway.

PRE-REGISTER FOR EASTER FOR KIDS Any child, age 3 through Grade 6, is welcome to attend Easter for Kids at St. John’s on Saturday, March 24. This is an outreach program–it would be great if St. John’s & Emmanuel kids who attend would invite a non-member or unchurched friend! Register online www.stjohnsmontello.org Get registration forms at both churches, in Monday Magazine, on church & school Facebook, & on public bulletin boards around Montello. This year’s theme is “Jesus—Giver of New Life.” Storytime, singing, crafts, baby animal petting zoo, egg hunt, & more bring the true meaning of Easter to the children. Deadline is Friday, March 16.

YOUTH WOODCRAFT PROJECT  On 7/6/17 lightning struck Gene Crook’s woodshop which was destroyed by fire.  In thanksgiving to God that no one was hurt, and now that his woodshop has been rebuilt and tools replaced, Gene invites up to 16 youth (grades 5-8) to come on Tuesday 2/13 at 3:30pm to his new woodshop to assemble bird feeder kits for youth to take and set up at their home.  Gene & Sharon Crook – W4018 County Rd. LENTEN SUPPERS We will be serving Lenten Suppers again this year! DUE TO THE TIME OF THE EVENING SERVICE AT 6:30P.M., we will be serving suppers from 4:15p.m.-6:00p.m. to help families skip the chore of making supper before they come to church. Come join us for a great meal, fellowship, and the Lenten service. Come for the meal after the 3:30p.m. service! We will be able to accommodate you at 4:15p.m…Watch the bulletin the Sunday before for the menu or see bulletin board display in the link way. A free will offering will go to each organization doing the supper. See you there!

MEMBERSHIP CLASS A new “Bible Information Class” began Wed 1/3/18 at 7:30pm in pastor’s office/conference room at St. John’s.  Alternate days/times can also be scheduled. Free study guides are available from pastor…just ask.

NEW WEEKDAY/EVE BIBLE CLASS Beginning January 2018, we started a new weekday/eve Bible Study entitled: “Your Questions–Scriptures Answers: Adiaphora” (things that God doesn’t command or forbid in the Bible and how we are to properly use our Christian freedom).  We meet at St. John’s in the pastor’s office/conference room Monday 7:30pm and Wednesday 10am. “Therefore let us leave the elementery teachings about Christ and go on to maturity…” (Hebrews 6:1)

LENT BY CANDLELIGHT Ladies, you won’t want to miss the second ever Lent by Candlelight on Sunday, February 11, 2018 at 5:00 PM at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Montello. Please plan to join us for an evening of visiting, beautiful music and scrumptious snacks. All women are invited and are encouraged to invite their friends to prepare their hearts for Lent. WEDNESDAY LENTEN DEVOTIONS “Jesus, Our Great High Priest” (based on the New Testament book of Hebrews) is the theme for this year’s midweek Lenten devotions beginning, Ash Wednesday, 2/14 3:30 p.m. at Emmanuel and 6:30 p.m. at St. John’s. Supper will be served in the St. John’s lower level from 4:30–6:00 p.m. “Jesus, I will ponder now, on your holy passion.” (Hymn 98)

SUNDAY BIBLE STUDY Following the Sunday 8:00 a.m. worship service at Emmanuel, usually about 9:00 a.m., all are invited to the parish hall for our study of “Timely Topics–Timeless Truths” led by Lucas Stelter.  At 9:00 a.m. in the St. John’s sanctuary, all are invited to our study of the New Testament book of James: “Concrete Christianity” led by Pastor John Dolan and others. “Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,” (2 Peter 3:18)

SECOND IMPRESSIONS THRIFT STORE is making plans to celebrate its one year anniversary, which is February 9^th! Be sure to watch church bulletins and/or Facebook for the latest news!

The Thrift Store has been very blessed with approximately 100 volunteers who so graciously and generously give of their time and talents! Many referrals by our customers are helping make our customer list grow! Volunteers continue to be needed to help keep up with the growth!

Customers may shop the store which provides a friendly, Christian atmosphere, with clean, well-organized, quality merchandise at great prices! Store hours are Tuesdays through Fridays 10a.m. to 6p.m. and Saturdays 10a.m. to 3p.m. It is located at 325 Winnebago Drive, Fond du Lac. We are also thankful to everyone who has so generously donated to the store! It certainly is a blessing. The donations have proved to be popular with our customers. Donations may be dropped off Mondays 10a.m. to 4p.m., Tuesdays through Fridays 10a.m. to 5p.m., and Saturdays 10a.m. to 2p.m. Thank you to everyone who has helped make our store a success!
